Batteries and the Front Range winter
Alkaline cells lose capacity in cold weather, and a keypad on a north-facing door spends much of the winter in it: DIA averages 152 freezing nights a year (NOAA). Swap batteries every fall, choose a model with a physical key override or an emergency battery terminal on the outside, and keep a real key somewhere you can get to.
New house, old codes
Many newer Denver houses came with a keypad already installed. The median home in Green Valley Ranch was built in 2007 and in Central Park in 2012 (Census ACS). After a move, a code the builder or the last owner set is no different from a key you never got back. Reset the master code and every user code, and the garage keypad while you're at it.
What Denver callers ask about this
Will a smart lock work in a Denver winter?
Most do fine, but they chew through batteries faster in the cold. Pick one with a key backup or an outside battery terminal, and replace batteries before November.
Can a locksmith install a lock I bought?
Usually, for a labor fee. Ask whether they'll stand behind hardware they didn't sell you.
