What happens at the car
- You share the VIN along with the year and model. The VIN is printed on your registration and visible at the base of the windshield.
- Both sides show ID; the locksmith also wants the registration.
- A blade gets cut, either from the factory key code or by decoding the door lock.
- The chip or fob is programmed to the car, and any missing keys are deleted from its memory so they can't start it again.

Make two while the van is there
A spare made alongside a working key costs far less than a key made from scratch. Keys fall into ski-area snow, get dropped at Red Rocks and vanish in the grass at Wash Park, and the second one is what saves you the next time.
Keys that left with a thief
If the key went with the car, erase it from the car's memory the moment you get the car back, and have the ignition and door locks looked at. Car stolen or keys taken.
What Denver callers ask about this
How long does it take?
For common models the cutting and programming often wraps up within an hour of the locksmith arriving. Rare models, or parts that need ordering, stretch that out.
Do I have to tow the car to the dealer?
Usually not; a mobile locksmith works where the car is parked. Only some newer or luxury models force a dealer visit.
