Denver lock work
Key copies in Denver
Copying an ordinary house key is cheap, and Fixr puts it at $10 to $25. The trouble starts with keys that carry a chip, and gets worse with fobs owned by a building.

Easy to copy
Regular house keys and padlock keys. Mailbox keys too, when the box is yours. Mailbox locks.
Harder, or off limits
- Chip car keys. Anyone can cut the metal blade. The chip still has to be programmed to that car before it will start it. Fob programming.
- Restricted commercial keys. High-security and restricted keyways are cut only for whoever holds the authorization card.
- Building fobs. In downtown's 80202, 96% of homes are in buildings of 10 or more units (Census ACS). Those fobs belong to the building, and management can switch a lost one off, which a copy can't.

A tip for older Denver houses: if your key is a fourth-generation copy of a copy, ask the locksmith to cut from the lock's code. Each copy picks up the wear of the one before it.
What Denver callers ask about this
My copied key doesn't work. Why?
Copies inherit the wear on the original. A locksmith can cut a fresh key to the lock's code instead of tracing your worn one.
Can I copy a key marked Do Not Duplicate?
Plenty of shops refuse, even though the stamp carries no legal weight. If the lock is yours, have a locksmith rekey it so you decide who holds keys.
